In what feels like a sharp allegory for today’s prison system, Sentence to Be a Hero is a dark fantasy anime where being a hero isn’t an honor — it’s a punishment. Criminals are forced into deadly battles against monsters in exchange for reduced sentences, turning heroism into a brutal cycle of survival, exploitation, and spectacle.
Premiering back in January 2026, Sentence to Be a Hero follows Xylo Forbartz a former knight who was wrongly accused of blah blah and most importantly, blah. Now he is thrust into this twisted fantasy realm with flesh hungry demons trying to survive with a sprinkle of divine politics.
SO WHY WATCH: Maybe you're a fan of creative prison reform? Or maybe you just love a good hack & slash. Either way you're covered.
9: Tomb Raider King
CREATOR: San.G
STUDIO: Studio EEK
This show is not Temu Solo Leveling, ok? - even though the trailer radiates that vibe.
Tomb Raider King follows Seo Joo-Heon, a betrayed relic hunter who gets a second chance at life after waking up in the past. Using his knowledge of the future, he sets out to collect powerful supernatural relics before rivals like Kwon Hyuk-Soo and the massive TKBM corporation can get their hands on them first.
Tomb Raider King has that classic overpowered main character energy, mixing modern-day chaos with fantasy as everyone races to obtain crazy powerful relics. Instead of hunters and dungeon gates, mysterious tombs begin appearing around the world, packed with supernatural artifacts that people are willing to betray, manipulate, and kill for.
It may not be the biggest name on the list, but if you dig power-scaling and watching a ruthless protagonist completely outplay everybody around him, this anime based on a South Korean webcomic is definitely one to keep an eye on.
SO WHY WATCH: I mean did you miss the part about power-ups and a main character who's not here to fuck around?
8:MAO
CREATOR: Rumiko Takahashi
STUDIO: Sunrise
Honestly, all that really needs to be said is Rumiko Takahashi — the legendary creator of Inuyasha — and you already know some heat is coming. But lucky for the internet, I’m in a writin’ mood.
Mao follows Nanoka Kiba, a girl who accidentally travels back in time to Taisho-era Japan and meets Mao, a cursed exorcist hunting dangerous supernatural creatures. Together, the two investigate eerie murders, demonic curses, and the mysterious connection tying their fates together.
Alright, for all the retro anime fans out there, this one’s gonna hit. Mao isn’t some basic fantasy adventure — it leans hard into that old-school supernatural energy with demons, curses, haunting mysteries, and a much darker vibe than you might expect at first glance.
Premiering in April 2026, Mao may not be the most hyped anime on the lineup, but if you’re into supernatural storytelling, creepy folklore, and that classic late-night anime atmosphere, it’s absolutely worth tossin’ onto the watch list.
SO WHY WATCH: Dude, demons. and do I REALLY need to mention the creator of Inuyasha again?
7: SNOWBALL EARTH
CREATOR: Yuhiro Tsujitsugu
STUDIO: Studio KAI
Snowball Earth follows Tetsuo Yabusame, a former child prodigy pilot who once fought alien invaders alongside humanity’s giant robot weapon, Yukio. Years later, he awakens to find Earth completely frozen over and overrun by monstrous threats, forcing him back into battle to uncover what the hell happened to the world.
Snowball Earth blends subtle sci-fi energy with post-apocalyptic drama and has already built a pretty loyal following in the short time its been out. While everybody’s hyping up the bigger names, this feels like the kinda series that could quietly slide in and become a sleeper favorite.
SO WHY WATCH: A frozen Earth, giant robots, survival mysteries, and humanity hanging on by a thread? Yeah… sounds like a damn good time to me.
6: LIAR GAME
CREATED BY: Shinobu Kaitani
STUDIO: Madhouse
For anyone who digs anime where everybody’s lying, scheming, manipulating, and playing 5D chess until somebody even smarter flips the whole board — Liar Game is absolutely your jam.
Liar Game follows the tragically honest Nao Kanzaki, who gets dragged into a high-stakes tournament built around deception, manipulation, and fucked up mind games. Teaming up with genius swindler Shinichi Akiyama, she’s forced to outsmart players constantly scheming to ruin each other for massive cash prizes.
Learning Madhouse production, Liar Game instantly shot way higher up my watch list. It’s the kind of series that has you side-eyeing those around while nodding out to the "Asahi" by Lucky Kilimanjaro outro.
SO WHY WATCH: Because any gamble love a good bluff.
5: DEAMONS OF THE SHADOW REALM
CREATOR: Hiromu Arakawa
STUDIO: Studio Bones
Alright, this series comes with some ridiculously high expectations because it’s got Hiromu Arakawa behind it — Yup the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist. And honestly, when the person responsible for one of the greatest manga/anime stories ever drops something new, you kinda have to pay attention.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm revolves around Yuru, a chills boy living in a remote village whose quiet life is shattered after discovering he and his twin sister Asa are tied to powerful supernatural beings known as Daemons. With conspiracies and dangerous enemies closing in, the twins become central figures in a conflict involving ancient powers, prophecy, and shadowy organizations.
This series pulls in lots of gritty supernatural energy that feels equal parts creepy folklore and full-on action thriller. Between the strange powers, hidden agendas, and weird small-town atmosphere, Daemons of the Shadow Realm gives off the vibe that something dangerous is moments from an ambush.
SO WHY CARE: Because after what Hiromu Arakawa did to lil Nina Tucker, we all learned the hard way to never underestimate her ability to emotionally violate an entire fanbase.
4: SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT
CREATOR: FromSoftware
STUDIO: Qzil.la
If you’ve ever touched the Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice video game, you already know exactly what kinda pain you’re signing up for with Sekiro: No Defeat. Samurais, brutal sword fights, revenge, blood, discipline, and a main character who looks like life personally beats his ass before breakfast every morning.
Sekiro: No Defeat explores Wolf, a ruthless shinobi sworn to protect the Divine Heir Kuro, as he masterfully cuts through warlords, monsters, and supernatural horrors across feudal Japan. After losing everything to Genichiro Ashina, Wolf is dragged into a brutal cycle of revenge, immortality, and nonstop bloodshed - What else can one ask for?
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice already had that cinematic anime energy in game form, so turning it into a full anime honestly just makes sense. Set to release September 4th, 2026, it gives us plenty of time to emotionally prepare for more pain, suffering, and watching Wolf get his entire life tested in beautifully animated combat.
The game was stressful enough, so I’m sure watching it happen in anime form will be super relaxing and involve absolutely zero rage whatsoever.
SO WHY WATCH: Because watching deep samurai pain won’t stop you from hating them bitches at work… but they might suck a little less by comparison.
3: THE GHOST IN THE SHELL
CREATOR: Masamune Shirow
STUDIO: Science Saru
Ghost in the Shell isn’t just another cyberpunk anime — it’s one of the main reasons people take the genre so seriously in the first place. So anytime a new reboot drops, you already know the anime community is about to debate every frame like it’s a political election.
Set in 2029, Ghost in the Shell takes place in a hyper-connected future Japan where global information networks dominate everyday life. The story follows full-body cyborg Motoko Kusanagi and her partner Batou as they join forces with Daisuke Aramaki to form Public Security Section 9 — an elite tactical unit built to stop cyber terrorism, political conspiracies, and emerging digital threats before they spiral out of control.
Releasing July 7th, 2026, Ghost in the Shell could end up being an incredible modern update to a legendary classic… or just end up completely piss off old-school fans within the first five minutes - which let’s be honest, some of them were probably planning to do the second the reboot was announced. Either way, I’m definitely watching it with the hope for a modern masterpiece.
SO WHY CARE: Because this trailblazing anime deserve a fuck ton of new fans, and hey, who doesn't dig hot cybernetic babes with gun whose mere existence is enough to start Twitter rants.
2: RE:ZERO − STARTING LIFE IN ANOTHER WORLD (Season 4)
CREATOR: Tappei Nagatsuki
STUDIO: White Fox
I mean, Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World being this high shouldn’t really surprise any true anime nerd out there. At this point Subaru has monopolized suffering for like six different protagonists, and somehow the series still keeps finding creative new ways to absolutely destroy what little mental health this poor fuck has left.
Honestly, that’s probably why we keep circling back.
Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World follows Subaru Natsuki, a regular modern dude transported to a medievalfantasy world who discovers he can return from death by rewinding time — usually after experiencing some of the most emotionally devastating end imaginable. Alongside half elves and demons, Emilia, Rem, and Beatrice, he’s forced to survive deadly political plots, monsters, and endless trauma loops.
Season 4 pushes Subaru and his crew deeper into the chaos as new enemies, dangerous alliances, and you guessed it - even more psychological suffering. At this point the real mystery is whether Subaru will save the world before stress completely folds him in half.
This returning series is easily one of the biggest animes of the year. If you’ve made it this far, like me you’re already hooked on Season 4. And if you haven’t started yet? Good luck catching up bud, because this definitely isn’t the kinda series you casually throw on in the background while doom-scrolling reel.
SO WHY CARE: Endless trama replays and the cutest waifu demons. It's sincerely one of the dopest fantasy dramas on steam today - I suppose.
1: WITCH HAT ATELIER
CREATOR: Kamome Shirahama
STUDIO: Bug Films
Witch Hat Atelier just had to snag the number one spot. This feels like the kind of fantasy anime made for people who miss when magic actually felt magical — not just nonstop rainbow explosions and power beams flying across the screen every five seconds.
Premiering on April 6th of this year, Witch Hat Atelier follows a young girl named Coco who dreams of becoming a witch despite being born with zero magical abilities. Her life changes after she accidentally discovers a dangerous secret about how magic truly works, pulling her into a much larger world filled with forbidden spells, shady ass witches, and hidden dangers congealing beneath the beauty of its fantasy setting.
SO WHY WATCH: Because hey, even the nerdiest of nerds needs a break from anime dudes with big hair screaming while pew-pewing chi lasers at each other every now and then.
Do any of these animes get you Kamehameha hyped? What other dope shows have made your Crunchyroll watch list?
